First part of the process is
seeking the inspiration
My inspiration comes from real life. Be it a landscape, a street view, or people. I'm looking for an emotion that the image will evoke in me.
The second part of the process is
creating a good reference image
This is the point where i decide which format i will use based on the image i start with. Decisions like will it be better as a full color piece using a digital giclée process or will simplifying the image be better in bringing out the emotion i'm looking for lending more to a print making process.
Third part of the process is
refinement
A real life scene, can over whelm you with options. Once i have the subject and emotion i'm looking for i need to determine what is really bringing out that emotion. Then remove the distractive elements or enhance the emotional elements to achieve my vision.
The fourth part of my process is
the conversion
up until now everything has been happening in the digital world. It's at this point i finalize the size of the artwork and transfer the digital image to a physical format on either woodblock or linoleum. and begin the carving process that will create the blocks for printing.
lastly you have the printing process
where there are still multiple decisions to make, such as color, tone, and paper. Because all the prints made are hand inked you will get slight variations from print to print. I use this step to again bring out the emotion I was looking for in beginning.
